Before converting Mapinfo data into a Shapefile format you must ensure that you have Mapinfo installed on your computer. Once this software is ready to go you can convert your TAB files (.tab) into shapefiles (.shp) — these shapefiles are far more suitable for use in Spotzi and other visualization platforms.
This example will feature a .tab file with the 4-digit postal-code boundaries of New Zealand.
To convert your .tab into a .shp file you must use the Universal Translator in MapInfo Professional. You can find the Universal Translator under the TABLE tab.
The FME Quick Translator tool will open. Click the TRANSLATE DATA button to start the conversion process.
A form will open. Select the input data (Reader) and the format you'd like to convert to, as well as the location of your TAB dataset.
Select the format and file location where you'd like to store your file after the conversion process is complete. Click the SEE MORE button and select the SHAPE format.
Click OK. When the conversion process is complete your new shapefile will be added to the output folder.
